At the beginning of March 1916, 9th East Surrey, 72 Brigade, 24th Division were in the trenches in front of Hooge in the Ypres salient. On 1st March and again on 2nd March the British artillery carried out a heavy bombardment on the German trenches opposite 9th East Surrey and inevitably the Germans responded in kind. On 2nd March they plastered the front line and support trenches causing a great deal of damage and inflicting nearly 20 casualties mainly among the men of “C” Company. The following day 9th East Surrey were relieved and moved back to dug outs at Zillebeke.
